“I can’t believe I’m going out on a date,” I told my reflection. “I haven’t been on a date in what? Five years? More?”

I rubbed my sweaty hands on my jeans again, for the fourth time in less than twenty minutes. My body twitched with nerves and uncertainty. I started to second-guess myself, more like I’d started to second-guess myself the moment I’d said yes to a dinner date with Adan.

A part of me didn’t want to go. I didn’t even know the guy. What if he was a real bore and talked only about sports and cars? I’d kill myself if he started to talk about golf. No, I’d excuse myself and escape through the bathroom window. Yeah, that’s what I’d do.

Of course, I was acting like a sixteen-year-old and not a soon-to-be thirty-year-old woman. What the hell was wrong with me? It was just a date. It’s not like I was going to jump into bed with him later. Casual sex wasn’t my style. But I’d been lonely for a long time, so best keep the wine away from me. Just in case.

I matched my dark jeans with a light burgundy top and finished the look with my black flats. No way was I wearing heels. If I wanted to ridicule myself, I would wear heels. Plus, if I needed a quick getaway, flats were a must. Or I could just go barefoot, but I doubted my aunts would approve. My long, skinny toes would have Adan running in the opposite direction.

The moment my aunts had arrived back at Davenport House, I’d told them about my date with Adan. The three of them burst into a brood of excited hens.

“Don’t forget to wear clean underwear,” Ruth had so amicably pointed out.

“And don’t prattle on about Star Trek and The X-Files,” Dolores had added, a hand on her hip while she directed me with her other hand. “You’ll sound too nerdy. You don’t want to scare him off. Men want to believe they’re smarter than you. But most have their brains in their pants, and they sit on them all day—so there you go.”

“Don’t put on anything that screams desperate either,” Beverly had told me. “You don’t want to show too much cleavage. Not that you have much to show. Still, men need a challenge. If it’s too easy, they’ll look the other way.”

“If that’s true, then how do you get dates?” Dolores had replied, making Ruth laugh.

I was glad they were having such a good time. You’d think they were going on the date with Adan and not me. I didn’t understand what the fuss was about. It was just a date. I guess being from a prominent witch family meant a lot to my aunts. To me, that meant just as much as a rock.

After pulling my long brown hair back into a low, messy bun, I applied some eyeshadow, liner, mascara, and some lip balm. I stood back and inspected myself.

“So, how do I look, House?” I asked the mirror.
